This guide is based on official product information and verified third-party sources as of 18 October 2026. We have not performed hands-on testing of these products. It is the map of our entire software coverage: what each category does, the reviewed products in it, and the specialist guides to go deeper.
The poker software landscape in plain English
Poker software is not one thing. Each category does a different job, and the right setup depends on which jobs you need.
- Trackers and HUDs. A tracker records every hand you play into a database; its HUD (Heads-Up Display) is the visible part — a small overlay at the table showing opponent statistics. The job: review your results and read the table.
- Equity tools. They calculate the mathematical probability of a hand or range winning a pot. The job: know your actual numbers instead of your feelings.
- Solvers. They compute Game Theory Optimal (GTO) strategy — play that is balanced so an opponent cannot exploit it. The job: find the “correct” way to play a spot.
- Tournament and ICM tools. The Independent Chip Model (ICM) converts chip stacks into real-money value given a tournament’s payout structure. The job: play the endgame — the bubble, push/fold, the final table — correctly.
- GTO training tools. They drill you against solutions and score your decisions. The job: turn knowledge into speed and instinct.

How to build your stack
The free stack (cost: nothing). Equilab or PokerStove for equity, Flopzilla’s free version for range work, the PokerNews calculator for quick checks, ICMIZER’s free daily calculation plus the free web ICM tools for tournaments, and GTO Wizard’s free tier for a taste of GTO. A complete, honest routine lives here.
Under $50. Add the Flopzilla Pro licence ($25) — the best single-value purchase in this entire guide — and/or Poker Copilot’s $39 edition. (GTO Wizard’s $39 annual-billing entry tier is monthly recurring, not a one-time $50 — size it up before choosing.)
Under $200 one-time. PokerTracker 4 ($64.99–$159.99) or Simple Postflop ($299 if you can stretch) or GTO+ ($75) — pick by the job you need next.
The professional stack. Heavy local solving (PioSolver €450–€800, MonkerSolver €499 for multiway/Omaha), a tracker of choice, ICM tools for tournaments, and a platform subscription if you study GTO daily.
FAQs
Which software works on Mac? Natively: PokerTracker 4, Hand2Note, Poker Copilot and ICMIZER 3 (plus GTO Wizard in any browser, and MonkerSolver, which runs on macOS). Windows-only tools (HM3, PioSolver, GTO+, Equilab, Flopzilla, PokerStove, Simple Postflop) need Parallels/Boot Camp where at all. See the Mac guide.
Do I really need a solver? No — most players get more from trackers and equity work first. Solvers answer strategy questions; if you cannot yet explain why a spot is hard, they will feel like magic. They become essential when you are studying GTO deliberately.
What is a HUD, exactly? The overlay of opponent statistics shown at the table by a tracker — VPIP, PFR and friends. It is information about players you have faced before, not advice about what to do.
Is free software enough for a beginner? Yes — the free stack in section 8 covers equity, ranges, ICM and a GTO taste. Beginners outgrow tools later; do not buy the top shelf first.
What is ICM? The model that prices your chip stack by the money it is actually worth in a tournament, given the payouts. It changes the correct answer near the bubble and in short-stack situations — see the tournaments guide.
Where do I go from here? Start with the beginners guide, then the category that matches your game. And read our methodology — every price and platform claim on this site is verified against official sources and dated, and our affiliate disclosure explains the links.
